• Sesil Karatantcheva Lost Her First WTA Semifinal

Tamarin Tanasugarn (Thailand) defeated Sesil Karatantcheva in straight sets 6-2 6-0 in the semifinal of the 220'000 WTA tournament in Pattaya City, Thailand.

 

• First WTA Semifinal for Karatantcheva

In a match lasted almost 3 hours and half Sesil Karatantcheva succeeded to defeat the Russian Ekaterina Bychkova, Rank 121, in 3 sets 7-5 4-6 7-5 to enter her first ever semifinal of the WTA tournaments. Karatantcheva will add 130 WTA ranking points to her balance and 10'200 USD of the prize money.

In the semifinal Sesil Karatantcheva will play the local Tamarin Tanasugarn. Tanasugarn stopped Karatantcheva in the 1st round of Australian Open last month.

 

• Sesil Karatantcheva is Quarterfinalist in Pattaya

Sesil Karatantcheva defeated in straight sets the Seed 8 and WTA rank 67 Julia Georges of Germany 6-2 6-1 in the second round of the 220,000 USD WTA International tournament in Pattaya City, Thailand. On Monday Karatantcheva defeated the local WC entry Suchanun Viratprasert 6-1 7-5 in the first round of the tournament. This is second win of Karatantcheva over Viratprasert within 1 week after the match for FedCup that they played for their national teams Kazakhstan and Thialand in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia. For entering the quarterfinals Karatantcheva will earn 70 WTA ranking points and 5380 USD of the prize money. The opponent of Sesil for the Friday's match will be decided on Thursday between the Russians Ekaterina Bychkova and Vera Dushevina (Seed 3, WTA Rank 40).

Sesil Karatantcheva entered the doubles tournament too with the young Australian Olivia Rogowska. They started successfully in the first round by defeating Chin-Wei Chan (TPE) / Yi-Fan XU (CHN) 7-6(4) 4-6 [10-7] but were defeated at the quarterfinals by the Seed 1 Anastasia Radionova (AUS) / Arina Radionova (RUS) 4-6 2-6.

In the continuation of the postponed 1st round match of the Australian Open Tamarin Tanasugarn of Thailand defeated Sesil Karatantcheva 6-1 7-6(1). Sesil could not use the advantage in the games 6-5 that she had and Tamarin won to 6-6. In the tie-break Karatantcheva took only 1 point and lost the match.

During the week of 1 February Karatantcheva will play in Fed Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The national team of Kazakhstan plays in Group I of Asia/Oceania Zone.

 

• The Match of Sesil Karatantcheva and Tamarin Tamasugarn Was Postponed for Yuesday

The rain changed the whole Day 1 program of the main draw of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday. Because of delays of many matches Karatantcheva and Tamasugarn started to play only in the evening hours on Monday. The Thai player quickly took the first set 6-1. Then she was about to take the match by leading 5-1 Sesil saved 5 match-balls. Karatantcheva won the next 5 games to 6-5. The judges then suspended the match and it will be continued on Tuesday at the same Court 6 after the match between Olga Govortsova and Angelique Kerber which starts at 11 am local time.

 

• Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand is the Opponent of Sesil Karatantcheva at the Stat of Australian Open

Sesil Karatantcheva will start vs the 32-years-old Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand in the first round of the Australian Open. The matches of the first round start on next Monday and Tuesday. Tanasuragn's current ranking is 99, back in 2002 she reached her best ranking of 19. The Thai has 3 singles titles in her career.

If Sesil is successful at the start she would meet Seed 15 Kim Clijsters BEL, the ex-No 1 and current WTA rank 15 in the second round.

 

• Main Draw Wild Card for Karatantcheva at Australian Open

The organizers of the 1st Grand Slam tournament of the new year Australian Open gave wild card for the main draw to Sesil Karatantcheva as the best ranked player from an Asian country that does not otherwise directly enter the main draw. Sesil will start on 18 or 19 January and the opponent will be clear when the main draw is announced on Friday, 15 January.

 

• The Ex No 1 Justine Henin Defeated Sesil Karatantcheva in the Second Round in Brisbane

Sesil Karatantcheva succeeded to repeat her last year participation at the 220'000 USD WTA tournament in Brisbane, Australia. Karatantcheva showed very good game but the ex World No 1 Justine Henin of Belgium won the 2nd round match 6-4 6-3. Karatantcheva leaves the tournament with 46 WTA ranking points and 2950 USD of the prize money.

Next week Sesil will compete in the qualifications of the 1st Grand Slam tournament of the year Australian Open in Melbourne.



 

• Justine Henin is the Opponent of Sesil Karatantcheva in the Second Round in Brisbane

Justine Henin who returned to the tour after 1.5 years will be the opponent of Sesil Karatantcheva in the second round of Brisbane International. Henin started her new career with a win over Seed 2 and Rank 20 Nadia Petrova of Russia with a result of 7-5 7-5.

 

• The Winning Series of Karatantcheva Continues at Brisbane International

Sesil Karatantcheva succeeded to defend her WTA ranking points from last year by reaching the second round of the 220'000 USD WTA International in Brisbane. In a match that lasted 1 h and 40 minutes Sesil Karatantcheva defeated the Australian Casey Dellacqua, ex-39 rank who played her first match after February 2009 after back injury.

Note on name spelling: Sesil Karatantcheva is Bulgarian. Bulgaria uses the Cyrillic alphabet. That's why the Bulgarian names are transliterated in Latin alphabet. Unfortunately there's no common transliteration table and what happens is that either every person decides how to transliterate his name or some journalists translitarate it. Very often the more common translitaration is different from the one written in the passport. And this is the case with the surname of Sesil. She's known as either Karatantcheva (used by WTA) or Karatancheva (on some Bulgarian English language media). Regardless of the transliteration it shoud be pronounced [ka:-ra:-'tan-che:-va:].

Her first name is transliterated as Sesil although some people might write it like Secile, Cecile, Secil. The way it should be prnounced is [se-'sil].

In Bulgarian language her name is Сесил Каратанчева. In Russian language her name is written Сесиль Каратанчева.
