• WTA Rank 219 for Sesil Karatantcheva
12 May 2008

In the ranking of WTA of 12 May Sesil Karatantcheva gained 8 places to move from 227 to 219 with 126 points of 11 tournaments.

The top-ranked Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova gains new positions and goes from 69 to 64.

While No 1 position is still for Justine Henin of Belgium, Maria Sharapova (RUS) becomes second best ranked and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia goes to position 3. Jelena Jankovic of Serbia goes from 5 to 4 ahead of Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.

This week Sesil Karatantcheva plays for her club in the Bundesliga in Germany.




 

• Sesil Karatantcheva Lost in the First Round in Bucharest
6 May 2008

Sesil Karatantcheva left the $50K ITF tournament in the Romanian capital Bucharest. The seeded 8 Karatantcheva was defeated by the wild card holder Simona Halep of Romania 6-4 3-6 0-6.

Sesil started the match very well and took the first set 6-4. Then she injured her ankle and this led to the poor game until the end of the match. In the second set after losing 1-4 she succeeded to decrease to 3-4. After that she was not able to win any game and lost the third 0-6.

Sesil gained 1 WTA rank point and 475 USD of the prize money.

According to preliminary information Karatantcheva will participate in the qualifications of the Internationaux de Strasbourg, III tier WTA tournament, $175K from 17 May as feed up from the tournament in Palm Beach Gardens where Sesil lost in the final match.

 

• Karatantcheva Starts as Seed 8 of the Main Draw of Gas de France Stars in Bucharest

On Tuesday, 6 May 2008, Sesil Karatantcheva will play her first round match of the main draw as seed 8 against the wild card holder the Romanian Simona Halep, WTA Rank 574 at the 50,000 USD ITF tournament Gas de France Stars in the Romanian capital Bucharest.




 

• Sesil Karatantcheva Advances to 227 in WTA Ranking

In the rankings of WTA of 5 May 2008 Sesil Karatantcheva is at position 227, climbing with 16 places from previous rank of 243. Karatantcheva has 125 points from 10 tournaments.

Tsvetana Pironkova loses one position and drops to 69. Dia Evtimova also loses positions and goes to rank 289.

There are no changes in the top 10 of the ranking. Justine Henin of Belgium is No 1 ahead of Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and the Russian Maria Sharapova.

 

• Anabel Medina Garrigues Defeated Karatantcheva in the Second Round in Fes
30 April 2008

In dramatic 3-set match of the second round of the WTA tournament Grand Prix de SAR Princesse Lalla Meryem in Fes, Morocco, Sesil Karatantcheva lost to the Seed 1 Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, WTA Rank 34 with a result of 6-3 6(4)-7 1-6. Sesil missed 2 match-balls in the second set then Anabel took opportunity and turned the match in her favor. The match lasted 2:45 hours and had a total of 14 breakpoints.

Karatantcheva won 15 WTA ranking points and 1925 USD. It was the first WTA tournament where Sesil participates in the main draw after her comeback after the ban.

Next week Sesil Karatantcheva will play in the main draw of the $50K ITF tournament in Bucharest, Romania.

 

• Karatantcheva Starts Successfully at $145K WTA Tournament in Fes, Morocco
28 April 2008

In the first round of the IV tier WTA tournament Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Fes, Morocco Sesil Karatantcheva defeated Elena Baltacha of the United Kingdom, WTA rank 146, 7-5 6-2.

In the second round Sesil Karatantcheva will play the winner of the match between the Spaniards seed 1 Anabel Medina-Garrigues, WTA Rank 34 and Lourdes Dominguez Lino, WTA Rank 99.

In this weeks WTA Ranking Sesil Karatantcheva climbed to 243, new best ranking for her after the comeback.




 

• Sesil Karatantcheva Lost the Final of $25K Tournament in Florida
20 April 2008

Seed 8 Soledad Esperon of Argentina, WTA Rank 254, defeated Sesil Karatantcheva 6-4 6-1 to win the title of the 25,000 USD ITF tournament in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA.

For playing in the final Karatantcheva gained 17 points for the WTA Ranking.

As finalist of the $50K ITF tournament in Latina, Italy, Sesil gets the right to play in the main draw of the IV tier $145,000 WTA tournament Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Fes, Morocco during the week of 28 April 2008.




 

• Karatantcheva vs Esperon is the Final of BallenIsles in Florida
19 April 2008

In a 3 set semi-final match Sesil Karatantcheva defeated the qualifier Sabine Klaschka of Germany 1-6 7-5 6-3.

In the other semi-final the Argentinean Soledad Esperon, Seed 8 defeated Sunitha Rao of India, Seed 1, in two sets 6-3 7-6(3).

The final match between Karatanctheva and Soledad Esperon, WTA Rank 254, is on Court 1 at 10:30 am local time.



 

• Sesil Karatantcheva Reached the Semi-finals of $25K ITF Tournament in Palm Beach Gardens
18 April 2008

Sesil Karatantcheva defeated 3-6 6-2 6-3 the Georgian Anna Tatishvili in the quarterfinals of the ITF tournament in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA.

In the Saturday semi-final match Sesil Karatantcheva will play the qualifier Klaschka of Germany, WTA Rank 550.

The other semi-final match is between Sunitha Rao of India, Seed 1 and Soledad Esperon of Argentina, Seed 8.




 

• With Convincing Win Karatantcheva Passes to Quarterfinals at BallenIsles ITF Tournament
18 April 2008

The American Story Tweedy-Yates, WTA Rank 382, took only 2 games of the second round match with Sesil Karatantcheva in Florida. With the convincing win 6-0 6-2 Karatantcheva became one of the quarterfinalists of the $25K ITF tournament.

At 10 am local time on Friday Sesil Karatantcheva meets the 18-years-old Georgian Anna Tatishvili, WTA Rank 296. Tatishvili defeated Seed 2 Raquel Kops-Jones (USA) in the second round.

Only 2 seeded players will play in the quarterfinals Sunitha Rao (IND) - 1 and Soledad Esperon (ARG).

Note on name spelling: Sesil Karatantcheva is Bulgarian. Bulgaria uses the Cyrillic alphabet. That's why the Bulgarian names are transliterated in Latin alphabet. Unfortunately there's no common transliteration table and what happens is that either every person decides how to transliterate his name or some journalists translitarate it. Very often the more common translitaration is different from the one written in the passport. And this is the case with the surname of Sesil. She's known as either Karatantcheva (used by WTA) or Karatancheva (on some Bulgarian English language media). Regardless of the transliteration it shoud be pronounced [ka:-ra:-'tan-che:-va:]

Her first name is transliterated as Sesil although some people might write it like Secile, Cecile, Secil. The way it should be prnounced is [se-'sil].
